Project Goal Client Analysis Poster Designs Prototyping Summary
This final project for my graphic design class was done in groups of four and gave the teams a designer precedent and client to use to create a microsite. Using our Designer Precedent, Wolfgang Weingart, we created advertising posters for our client, the Holland Festival, using Weingart's design principles. The poster designs would then be used to inspire our microsite, which would primarily be a space for users to view shows and purchase tickets.

Project Goal
Client Analysis
Our designer precedent is Wolfgang Weingart is known as the father of New Wave Typography. He was a typesetter and his work revolved around the use of typographic images, photomontage, layering textures, and color.
The Holland Festival exhibits artists in order to facilitate collaborations and encourage the meeting of creative minds. It is an international performing arts festival but they also show other arts like visual arts and photography.

Poster Designs
In order for my team and I to create meaningful and relevant posters, we performed thorough research to understand how Wolfgang Weingart creates his works. We found three design principles that are prominent in Weingart's work.

Photomontage is used to create texture. By layering imagery, and type together it creates deep dynamic compositions that also tell their own visual story.
The use of type in varying scales, shapes, and weights allow for some interesting relationships to form between figure and ground while at the same time challenging readability.
Color is used to emphasize specific areas within the composition. It is used as a form of hierarchy within the composition guiding the viewer from start to finish.
Holland Festivals Posters often feature bright colours so this is another element we wanted to include since we need to be aware of the client we are designing for. The following three posters were some of the first iterations that we thought were our strongest start.
Upon further reflection and after receiving critiques on our first posters we continued on to produce posters that were overall more interpretive and also featured more typography as imagery since this is what we were lacking.
Prototyping

Using the principles and designs from our posters and other initial explorations we began to prototype the microsite. Below is our initial ideation process which features the hidden menu page, a similar show selection page, and an article page.

After receiving feedback stating that the ideas were good, but a little flat, we went on to create a more expressive and dynamic design that features a lot of analogous colours and edited photos.
Summary
My group was overall very pleased with our final product and we found that we made great leaps and breakthroughs during each iteration of this project. Below I have attached a video of the working prototype so you can really see the animations and functions of the site.
