This project was assigned in my Graphic Design class as a group project. I worked with three classmates to research an Art and Design Festival in order to find a way to improve the visitor experience.

We each did our own initial research and worked together to put out surveys and arrange zoom meetings with people who attended or wanted to attend the Design Indaba Festival.

The Design Indaba Festival takes place on a yearly basis in Cape Town, South Africa. They aim to not only bring together the best in the world of design, art, and creativity but also celebrate and promote the African design community. This is achieved by a multitude of different mediums and creative outlets which the festival participates in and promotes.

Through the use of art and creative design solutions, the festival believes that “creativity will fuel an economic revolution in South Africa.”

From our surveys and interviews, we learned that the Festival does an amazing job of keeping things organized and relevant to their goals and values. What is lacking however is people's overall understanding of true African art and culture in its different forms.

The goal for the website was to have a way for users to navigate through different styles of African arts and culture articles and receive a reward once each article is read through. The rewards are a geometric shape that can be downloaded and/or used in the user's profile design space on the site. They can resize and rearrange the shapes to create their own artwork that shows how much they have learned.

Point of Intervention

After brainstorming many ways to solve this issue we decided the best way would be to make African art as rewarding as possible to learn about for Design Indaba's audience. To accurately depict the types of people Design Indaba may attract we created two user personas inspired by the people my group learned from.

"The people running it are the kindest, most professional people I have ever met. They really go out of the way to make sure everything is smooth, and are truly passionate about what they do."

Overall, the project aimed to allow attendees to leave with a deeper understanding of why Design Indaba does what they do. I believe my groupmates and I achieved this in an engaging, meaningful, and aesthetically pleasing way. Through thorough research and creative implementations, we achieved our goals and even exceeded them.
