Project Intro & Background

This may be the craziest project I've ever taken on, which proves I'm ready for just about anything. So, what you're looking at here is a city plan that I begun designing when I was in grade 10 (in 2016). My initial idea was to map out a city and design the buildings within. That's right I not only did I make a layout of the city, but I did all the buildings you see too. There are a few exceptions however, I did not design the inside of any hospitals, police stations, fire stations, dentists or doctors offices. I felt that these were buildings that I didn't know enough about and probably wouldn't be able to design effectively due to that. You will also notice the city transitions from a more suburban area in the north and west portion to more urban in the east and south areas. I included more houses, schools, and practical stores in the suburbs and high rises, urban shopping, and entertainment in the urban area.

I started with a first draft which took a few months and designed the buildings alongside it. I then proceeded to seek out feedback from my drafting class, drafting teacher, friends, and family. I took all these concerns and many new ideas and expanded and edited the city which I finished in February of 2019. Currently I'm working on a 3D physical model of the city.

Here are some specs and facts of the city:

  • the paper is about 7.5'x8.5' and I've scaled it to each 1" =100'

  • it has enough housing to hold about 25,000 people

  • there are 3 large single family home subdivisions

  • there are 7 townhome neighbourhoods

  • there are over 20 high rise apartments

  • entertainment includes a stadium, amusement park, waterpark, a casino, a movie theatre, an amphitheater, go kart track, mini golf, full golf course, yacht club, arcades, campsite, beach, boardwalk, pier, parks, community center, pools, mall, museum, paintball arena, laser tag, trampoline park, skate park, and probably more that I'm missing

  • there is a greyhound bus terminal, ferry terminal, and 4 bus routes that go around the city

I've tried to include a variety of things and activities for the population of the city. As you may notice the upper part of the map is more suburban, there's more homes and small stores along with many schools for families. In the bottom portion there are more commercial businesses, apartments, entertainment, and transportation. Here are some more stats about the types of buildings in the city:

  • there are 6 preschools, 5 elementary schools, 2 high schools, and 1 university

  • there are restaurants ranging from pubs to Mexican to Chinese food

Project Summary

All in all I designed over 100 homes, 20+ apartment buildings, and 70+ other business and buildings. I am currently working on a physical 3D model of the city at its current scale which is set to 1"= 100'. I also have a legend to dictate what some of the symbols and colours mean.

The symbols for the bus stops and routes are colour coordinated to symbolize the different bus lines. There are 4 in the city that each have their own routes. I put solar panels on the tops of most buildings because I want my city to be as green and eco- friendly as possible.
